About Jewish Flight into China
The history of Jewish immigration into China intrigued Pearl S. Buck and her husband Richard Walsh so much that each explored the topic in their published works. Ms. Buck wrote the play “Flight Into China” and the novel “Peony” on the subject. Mr. Walsh included scholarly articles about the topic in his publication, Asia magazine. This exhibit ties all their works together and explores immigrant acceptance, assimilation and discrimination. The exhibit culminates in the story of one Jewish family’s flight into China during WWII carrying “The Good Earth” in their suitcase.
